Keep Losing Internet, Is It A Router Problem?

Submitted by admin on September 29, 2009 – 4:30 am5 Comments

I have a D-Link EBR 2310 wired router and 2 pc’s connected through it. I bought it this year in May and it worked fine until I noticed my internet would disconnect periodically throughout the day (sometimes 5 times a day). I called my ISP, which is Charter Communications, and they couldn’t detect a problem with the wired connection outside or inside but my modem was getting old so they hooked me up with a new one.
But that didn’t help!
I’m still losing connection periodically, I’m wondering if it’s my router and what can I do? I’ve updated to the latest firmware, checked all router settings and everything I know of.
A friend of mine has a switch he uses to create a simple home network, would that work better?

If the router is also wireless, turn off the wireless portion of the router/switch. This is especially true if you or a close neighbor have a 2.4 GHz wireless telephone. We had this issue with the switch dropping both wireless and wired connections every time the telephone rang.
The options are to not use the wireless, or go to a 5.4 GHz wireless telephone.
Whether wireless or not, be sure to check cables (if necessary, buy another patch cable just to test), check to see if reloading drivers helps, and if using any OS after WIndows 2000, check your system logs for error messages that might indicate another problem.

you problem could be your router. try unplugging the power to the router, shut down both computers and then do this in order: power up the router, then start the computers. this wil make the computer network card refresh the ip address and he mac address of the router.
If you try the switch keep in mind that Charter is only suppling you with 1 ip address. a switch will require charter to supply 2 addresses. 1 for each computer. this will cost extra money per month. Good luck!

Go to the dlink.com web site and see if they have a firmware update for your router.
If so, download it, read the directions on how to install it, and then install it.
    Good Luck,

I use D-link routers alot at work and it happen to overheat all the time… the only way to fix them it so reset them… Unplug and re-plug…..
I’ve not gotten to the point that we don’t buy d-link anymore… Just Linksys….

You can not use a switch, you need a router to get more than one machine to connect. If the modem uses dhcp to allocate an address to the router, check that it’s lease time is set to 28 days or so, often they come configured in hours.
