How Do I Connect A Netgear Wireless Router?

Submitted by admin on September 20, 2009 – 4:30 am3 Comments

My problem is that my current dsl is connected to my computer via a usb port out of an RCA broadband box. My netgear router only has ethernet ports. The netgear instructions want me to unplug my internet connection from the back of my computer & plug it in to the netgear router, but there aren’t any usb ports in the netgear box. I think the people who setup the original connection, couldn’t get the ethernet to work, so they used the usb connection instead. Any ideas?

You can’t use the USB modem to connect to your router! Return this modem back to your Internet service provider, and get the traditional modem that comes with Ethernet port.
If not, go ahead to buy the modem with Ethernet port yourself, then will solve your problem.
    Hope helps..

Does your Modem support Ethernet? I’m assuming from your message it does.
Use the instructions in the manual for the router to set your system up.
Your modem should require no changes to switch to Ethernet.
The router should come with an install CD that will make the conversion pretty simple
If you get stuck – come on back
The advantages of putting a router between you and the Internet are worth the work of replacing your USB connection with Ethernet.
Remember that you will need 2 Ethernet PATCH cords, one to hook the router to the Modem and one as a setup connection when you are first setting up the router.
Once you have the router set up and security enabled, then you can go wireless

Use the ethernet port. If they couldn’t get it to work then most likely something is wrong with your NIC card (the ethernet port on your computer). Either that or they just don’t know how because I highly doubt that there is anything wrong with the ethernet port on the modem since USB works. Assuming everything is fine with all your hardware, after plugging the modem to your router and dsl line, and then router to computer, you need to go into the router settings to set the password and login name. To do this, go internet explorer or any other browser and type in the ip address of the router (you can find this in the manual, usually its something like 192.168.1.1). An easier way would be to insert the CD that came with the router because it will guide you through if you are not an advanced user. You can then remove the software that you originally installed on your computer to control the RCA modem because the router will automatically communicate with the modem to establish a connection even if your computer is off.
